From the moment the S.T.Dupont House was founded in 1872, Simon Tissot-Dupont magnified the finest and rarest of materials by producing luxurious accessories adorned with gold, diamonds, mother of pearl, Chinese lacquer or alligator. Simon Tissot-Dupont originally founded a prestigious leather goods workshop, where he produced leather pieces bearing the initials of eminent figures of the time. His creations quickly found success amongst elegant Parisians. As early as the 1920s, Simons sons Andre and Lucien Dupont were innovating; they created sumptuous, custom made, travel trunks which became popular with the international elite. In 1935, the Tissot-Dupont brothers hired a Russian Lacquerer and S.T.Dupont became the custodian of a closely guarded secret: the process of applying Chinese lacquer to metal. Drawing on his expertise as a goldsmith, the trunk maker created the pocket gas lighter in 1941. The last trunk, in lavender blue morocco leather, was made in 1947 for England`s Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen, to celebrate her wedding. In 1952, its patented gas lighter proved hugely successful. The society`s elite and those in the know would easily recognize it by the sound it makes, the famous “cling”. In 1973, the brand brought its innovative talents to bear with the creation of the first luxury ball point pen, which was beautifully streamlined and made of solid gold. A reference in the area of design, it was sold at the MoMA in New York. In 1976, S.T.DuPont went back to its roots and returned to its original vocation: leather goods craftsmanship. Today, S.T.DuPont`s luxurious accessories continue to call upon the finest materials and the rarest know-how, with the craftsmen constantly trying perfect the mastering of their expertise. To date, it is the only House that has mastered the ancient technique of Chinese Lacquering.

The art of smoking

During the Second World War, leatherworkers learned how to craft gold and silver, and created a petrol pocket lighter in 1941. In 1952, however, it was S.T.Dupont’s gas lighter that met with dazzling success. In the 1960s, the collective memory crowned it a cult object. The Dupont lighter established the brand’s reputation, putting it at the top of the list of the great names in French luxury. Six hundred operations, 300 tests, 70 pieces and over 100 hours of work are required to create a lacquer lighter… An entire art, captured in the sophisticated and discreet cling of certain lighters when they are flicked open.

In 1973, S.T.Dupont broke new ground in creating the first luxury ballpoint pen worked in precious metals: a timeless and streamlined object combining style, quality, technical prowess and comfort.
